Historian Laurie Russell discusses how a lack of male heirs propelled the women in the Medill, McCormick, and Patterson families to do amazing things.
From serving in Congress, breaking flight records, winning the Pulitzer Prize, and owning their own newspapers, each woman has a fascinating story. Laurie Russell is a former docent for the Chicago Architectural Foundation and a docent for the McCormick Museum in Cantigny Park.
Cantigny Park is the 500-acre former estate of Colonel Robert R. McCormick, a member of the U.S. Army’s First Division in WWI and longtime editor and publisher of the Chicago Tribune. After his death, he established the Robert R. McCormick Charitable Trust and designated Cantigny as a public space for education and recreation. Here you will find the Robert R. McCormick Museum, a historic house museum interpreting the life and legacy of the Colonel. The mansion reveals the public and private sides of one of America’s wealthiest and most philanthropic families. REGISTER
